Heraclius's Technology Ramblings
I've decided that I'm not keen on organizing this site as yet another blog, and so I'm experimenting with other ideas for organizing collections of my writings. For now, it's going to take the form of a bunch of non-chronological, loosely organized, stand-alone pages. The overall formatting and structure of this part of the site is subject to change (though I'll do my best not to reorganize pages in such as way as to break links).
I don't currently have an RSS feed set up for this site, but as I start to post content on it more regularly and solidify what this part of the site will look like, I will add one.
Artificial Intellegence
I'm not really an "AI" guy by trade--though I am within the field of computer science, and do have a bit of experience with AI from both an academic and professional point of view. These are some of my rambling thoughts on AI, and the public perceptions of AI.
- The Problem with AI is Us
My somewhat wandering thoughts about the problems we are currently facing with respect to AI and jobs in three of the most affected disciplines: writing, programming, and visual arts. I trace the fundamental problem to "us": low standards, and poor taste on behalf of most people. These systems are not themselves very good, but they are able to succeed because of our own poor standards. This means that there is hope--we can prevent a lot of the impending damage by reconsidering our cultural values and placing more emphasis on artistic merit and challenging problems.
Cell Phones
This is a collection of my thoughts and writings on cell phones--a tool which has come to absolutely dominate our everyday lives. Just to get the important bit out of the way early: I'm not a fan a smartphones. In these pages, I explore my thoughts as to why I don't, and talk about the phones that I personally use
- Are Dumbphones Minimalist?
One very funny thing to watch is when fans of "minimalist" dumbphones post about and discuss the massive amount of stuff that they carry with them on a daily basis to counter-act the fact that they don't have a smartphone. In this page, I think about the implications of this, and whether dumbphones can be considered "minimal".
- My Search for a Phone
I'm not a big fan of smartphones, and so a little over a year ago I decided to switch back to a dumb phone. This page covers some of my thoughts on how that process is going, what I'm looking for a phone, and why I'm still not completely satisfied with my options
The Internet
Another ubiquitous part of modern life, the Internet also has its own slew of problems. These are some of my thoughts on all things Internet and Internet-adjacent.
- Rossmann, Grayjay, and Sovereign Identities
There was, some months ago, a large amount of noise on the Internet regarding GrayJay--an application released by FUTO as part of their program of creating sovereign identities on the web. This is largely a response to the control that a couple of large corporations now have over our digital identities. This page was originally posted on my blog shortly after Grayjay released, and discusses some of my thoughts and concerns with the approach that FUTO is taking.
